In November of 2015, Derek Cote decided to start an annual golf tournament that would both commemorate his father, Armand Cote, as well as raise money for cancer research. Derek's father Armand passed away of pancreatic cancer in 2001. Derek knew he always wanted to start a tournament in his father's memory at Waukewan Golf Course, where his father was a ranger, and Derek was a member.
Derek was especially motivated to do something that could make a difference because he himself was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer, in the fall of 2014. He figured he could raise money for Multiple Myeloma cancer research as well. He wanted to expand the umbrella of people the money he raised could potentially help-maybe, even him.
This idea inspired the name ACDC Golf tournament, the "AC" for Armand Cote, and the "DC" for Derek Cote. ACDC was one of Derek's favorite bands so it was perfect.
Since the first tournament, however, it was decided to only raise money for Multiple Myeloma research for logistical reasons.
After 3 successful tournaments, in the winter of 2017, Derek passed away but his family knew they wouldn't let the tournament fade-they wanted to carry out his legacy and continue to contribute to the research that could potentially save another person's life because that's what he would've wanted.
Over the past 6 years, the event has raised approximately $120,000 for Multiple Myeloma cancer research. Every year, family and friends show up to support this cause and keep Derek's memory alive. That support is what brings joy to the hearts of his family.
